I published a post a while back about gossip ink’s impending social media open case study.  Well I’m proud to announce that it’s finally started!

Head on over here to check out the 2 businesses that are getting their digital feet wet in the social media ocean.  At the same time, you can check out my ultra-cheesy introduction video, that not only highlights my aging skin, but puts a spot light on my funny hairdo and love for the black pull over (RIP Steve Jobs – iCon) I’m only 19 you know and look at least 40.  Confused yet?

If there’s one thing that recording this short video has taught me, it’s that to get the most out of social media (or even your business itself), you have to not only be willing to step outside your comfort zone, you have to be willing to kick and smash the absolute crap out of it!

I have this problem you see.  Firstly, I don’t jump at the chance to talk in front of hundreds, though at the same time I’m entirely scared of it.  What I do have an issue with however, is that when I’m presented with a finite period of time with which to present, I go into “unnecessary detail mode”.  I start to stress that what I want to say needs to be shoeboxed into 10, 30, 60 minutes, whatever.  I then incessantly begin to “write” what needs to be said in that period of time.  This of course adds more stress as even though I may have the “ultimate message” to fit in any given time slot, I feel I have to remember it so I don’t look a douche reading from a page.

So, after what felt like the 50th take on that video (it was probably more like the 10th) I lost the teleprompter and just spoke from the head and the heart.  And I think I nailed it on the second take.

Now I know I’m not cured, but it just means that from this point forward, all of this “look at me Mum, I’m on the net!” type stuff will get that little bit easier.  And, I’m finding the same resistance with the two businesses taking part in the case study.  Both are a little hesitant to put their faces out there (and not meaning to sound gay or sleazy, but they’re both extremely presentable, ps: I’m married and there’s nothing wrong with being gay!) and I’m expecting that when I stick the camera in front of them, their years of experience and knowledge that are literally gushing out of them will suddenly just stop like a set of 8-pot Carbon Ceramic Brembo brakes…

But this is what I’m secretly hoping for.  This case study, is definitely focusing on social media.  But at the same time, it’s focusing on your business, and your inhibitions at promoting that business.  One on one selling?  Too easy.  One to many selling?  C’mon throw me another.  One to a million selling?  Whoa, wait how many???

There will come a time when social media will be as passé as websites.  Everyone will be chatting, everyone will be podcasting, and of course, everyone will be using video.  So when that time comes (and it’s sooner than you think) you will need be able to walk into that room or in front of that camera, and basically, deliver like a boss!

So find your comfort zone, and start poking at it with a stick.  Then, when that poking starts to feel “just right”, grab a bat and beat the freakin hell out it!  Lose the fears, lose the excuses, and lose the attitude, jump in there and just have a ball.  Your Social Media needs, no deserves and demands it!
