gossip ink is proud to announce a couple of exciting projects launching in the coming weeks.

Social Media is the hot topic of the moment driven by the powerhouses of twitter, facebook, google+ and the almighty blog.  Hundreds, even thousands, confess to be experts, but in reality we’re all just a couple of steps away from each other.  With the rules changing almost daily, what a person could be an expert in one day, may be totally useless the next, and the need to diversify and have a presence in all social media platforms, is paramount.

In the coming weeks, gossip ink will be launching Social Media Open Case Study: Live!  This project will follow 2 distinct REAL businesses (one bricks and mortar / online, and one professional services) as they establish, build and grow through social media.  It will run for a period of 12 months with every facet of their social media strategy documented, implemented and monitored.

Being an “open” case study, the ideas put forward to both of these businesses will not be from gossip ink alone.  We would encourage others to suggest ideas and comments through open forums such as our Facebook fan pages, our blogs, Linkedin group discussions and just general email communications.  We are not trying to get the work done through other people’s ideas, but rather entertain the thought of potentially including them with these businesses.  You might be an owner of a similar business, a person that has a 9-5 but has their finger on the pulse, or even a social media marketer yourself, the ideas put forth may help clients you already have, help your existing business, or even spark more ideas on how you can use social media in every aspect of your life be it personal or work.

Updates to both of these businesses will be via regular blog posts, podcasts and video clips and so you will have a chance to see and read all about the successes, failures, stresses and victories of both companies, almost as fast as they occur.

We will try and be as detailed as possible and will also include costs associated with each and every improvement to the businesses social media.  I for one, have been guilty of preaching the costs of social media (being mainly time) and in reality for a small business, the cost is more than just that.  Graphic design costs for custom Facebook landing pages, printed banners that may be displayed in or outside a shop, business card redesigns and prints, professional photographic work for profile pictures and products.  All of this type of work costs money.  And even if you have the skills to do some of this work yourself, how long would it take?  If you charge out at $200 an hour and take 3 hours to create a custom landing page, surely you could have got one created for less than $600?  This is the type of information that all small businesses need to know and only factor into the equation after lengthy discussions with in-house staff or a social media agency.

These 2 cases studies will give readers a chance to see first-hand the effects of Social Media into 2 very different business models and business types.  I will almost guarantee that a successful strategy for one, will not work for the other, and I’m hoping (more so preying) that these businesses will push the boundaries of Social Media technology (and I can attest now, both of these businesses are shaking in their shoes at the thought of appearing in front of a camera!).

We have some pretty radical ideas at the moment, and we have been given and very faint, almost unsure green light to use them all, and so we are dying to jump right in and implement these strategies to see if our propeller head ideas are valid.  And I’m sure they will be.

So at the moment, we just ask for you to be a little patient while we set up the back end boring stuff and keep your eyes peeled for updates.
