1.   Make sure you setup a Facebook Page and not a Profile!

This is first and foremost and if you do it right the first time, it’ll be smooth sailing afterwards.  Creating a Facebook profile (or using your existing Facebook profile) for your small business is a common and costly mistake.  Directing potential clients to your personal profile can lead to them being exposed to many unwanted elements (wall posts, comments and photos in particular) which could very well damage your business.  So, create a Facebook page for your business now if you don’t already have one, and start directing people to it ASAP.  The link is below.

2.   Assign more than 1 administrator to the page.

Do this after you do step one.  If you don’t, you could find yourself banging your head against a wall if your Facebook profile gets shut down (and it has happened before).  So make sure you assign a second, thirds or even a fourth admin, and share the love.

3.   Get to 25 likes as soon as you can to setup a custom username.

After you’ve setup your Facebook Page, tell all of your friends, and all of your employee’s friends to like it.  Get to 25 likes as soon as you can to enable a custom username for your page.  This will make it easier for you to pimp your facebook.com address on everything from email signatures, sales posters, business cards to sky writing!

4.   Link your other social media accounts to it.

Applications, applications, applications.  If I had my IT time again, I would write applications.  Facebook applications are an awesome way of tying in your other social media platforms to your Facebook page.  Do it like a boss!

5.   Put extra spaces under your descriptions to make it read better

I’m a stickler for written aesthetics.  That’s why all of my blogs are fully justified.  I hate having text all over the shop and too close together.  What I’ve found, is that in the Basic Information section, at the bottom where it asks for Descriptions and stuff, put some extra blank spaces under your last line.  It makes it MUCH easier to read and it looks a tonne better.

6.   Make the most out of your profile picture

Profile pictures for your Page have a size limit.  Facebook like to change the sizes a bit, but as of now, they are now set at 180×540 which is huge enough for you to be able to get a decent logo in, as well as some details or your service/product/you, your message or your catch line.  Get someone with graphic skills to make you a custom profile pic, or do it yourself to greatly improve your first impressions.

 7.   Enable the events tab

This is an included application but disabled by default and I don’t know why.  Event calendars are useful in most businesses so I would suggest you enable it ASAP (if it’s relevant to your business).  Edit your page, go to Apps, Edit Settings under Events, then click Add.

8.   Put a link in the About box

I like to think of this more of a “link box” than an “about box”.  You can actually fill it out with information ABOUT your business, but the format sucks, and it really doesn’t belong there.  Give it a shot, write some info about your business, view your page, and you’ll see what I mean.  Instead, put a link to your main website there, or another link, say to your online shop if you have one.  Make use of that isolated “in your face” white space.
